Stingray Positions

Clerk of Course

Get swimmers to the proper lane for each event and hands event slips to recorder. May combine events with the approval of the TSA Rep. Clerk of Course is responsible for double checking that each swimmer is in the proper lane, as indicated by the heat sheets. This is VERY IMPORTANT in order to avoid scoring mix-ups. Clerk of Course will be notified of any last minute changes before the start of the main event

Stroke and Turn Judge

Judges whether proper stroke, turn and finish are executed by the swimmers during the meet. This position is split into first half and second half for each meet.  Required to attend one two hour class presented by the TSA.

Timers

Positioned at the end of the pool to obtain times for their own teams swimmers during the meet. This task is executed by hitting a button on an electrical timing system at the end of a race. Some notating of times is taken manually on paper in some situations.

Runner

Takes event sheets from the recorder and disqualification sheets from the stroke and turn judges and carries them to the scorer’s table. The runner must deliver the sheets directly to the scorer’s table and not allow coaches or other interested parties to intercept them in transit. This is a mobile position. Wear comfortable shoes.

Kid Pushers

Kid Pushers ensure swimmers are ready for each race with caps, goggles, etc, line swimmers up for their events, adhere to the lane and heat assignments on the heat sheet, and walk the swimmers to the Clerk of Course. Kid Pushers will also be responsible to ensure their areas clean and trash-free (ask swimmers to clean up).

Heat Winner Distributor (Home Only)

Stands at the finish end of the pool and hands “Heat Winner” award to Heat Winners at the end of each heat. Judges will not be responsible for determining the heat winner, so the ribbon distributor must be watching during these races. (Main Event winners do not receive “heat winner” award.)

Ribbon Writer

Complete main event ribbons and file ribbons for distribution to swimmers at the next practice.  This task is completed after the meet and can be done at home.  Coordinate with the TSA Rep to prepare ribbons for distribution to swimmers.

Starter (Home Only)

The starter has complete control of swimmers delivered to the starting blocks by the clerk of the course. Uses the commands "step up" (or "step in the water" for backstroke), "Timers and judges ready", announce the distance and stroke or relay event, 'Take your mark", press the starting device button. This position remains stationary at the starting end of the pool.  The Start will use a bullhorn, microphone, or air horn.

Announcer (Home Only)

Communicates to swimmers, officials, and observers over the public address system. Welcomes the visiting team to our pool, announces the officials for the evening, calls each event so the meet flows smoothly, and announces team scores throughout the evening.

Meet Set-Up HOME meets

At Home Meets, this position arrives at the pool at least by 4 pm. Set up starting blocks (filling with water takes about 90 minutes), line up sitting chairs behind the starting blocks, set up scoring table, ribbon and announcer tables, temporary lighting, swimmer tent set up, and stack up lounge chairs.  Uses caution tape to rope off splash area.  Sets up ropes on opposite side of blocks, hangs signs around pool area.
